Open Mic Estate 2025: Emerging Talents of Puglia's Freestyle Scene

Marco Donato 7 min read

The summer that launched new talents

From July to August 2025, every Thursday evening the square in Botrugno became an open stage. Open Mic Estate is the project created by APS OnStage to give a voice to those who don't yet have access to traditional stages.

A simple but revolutionary format

- Free sign-up for performers
- Free admission for the audience
- Slot duration: 10 minutes per rapper
- Only rule: no pre-recorded instrumentals, only live beats or beatbox

This last point is crucial. It forces rappers to develop a direct connection with the beat, the way it happened in the 1980s golden age of freestyle hip-hop. No hiding behind elaborate production: just rhymes, flow and authenticity.

The protagonists

Among the twenty participants, four left an indelible mark:

1. Chiara M., 17 (Melendugno) — Her final performance tackled the theme of gender-based violence with rare maturity. She won the audience award.

2. Luca "Penna" Rossi, 19 (Lecce) — A pure freestyler, he chose to improvise entirely. Two minutes of real-time rhyming that got the audience on its feet.

3. Daniela Rizzo, 22 (Brindisi) — A singer moving into rap. Her fusion of melody and rhyme offers a fresh perspective on the genre.

4. Marco "Fresh" Donato, 18 (Botrugno) — Namesake of our board member, but no family ties. He brought the street credibility that is often missing from organized stages.

The impact on the community

After the summer nights, the four young performers kept performing in courtyards, creating a weekly cypher every Friday. The community is naturally growing around them.

Next edition

Open Mic Estate 2026 will have an expanded version: seven nights, well-known guest appearances, a final featuring candidates from across Puglia.

Whoever emerges from these spaces will be the ones carrying Salento freestyle to regional and national stages.
