"Freestyle 101" Workshop 2025: 30 kids and a passion for rhymes
An educational experiment
In September 2025, APS OnStage launched a bold experiment: teaching freestyle rap as an educational tool for teenagers at risk of dropping out of school. The project, funded by a local grant, involved 30 kids aged 14 to 18.
The "unconventional" curriculum
The eight weeks of workshop followed a logical progression:
Weeks 1-2: Active listening
- Analysis of famous rhyme structures
- Study of flow and prosody
- Basic beatboxing
Weeks 3-4: Freestyle technique
- Rhyme fundamentals: single-syllable, two-syllable, multi-syllable
- Guided improvisation over simple beats
- Verbal memory techniques
Weeks 5-6: Content and message
- Writing rhymes on personal themes (bullying, identity, hope)
- Developing a personal voice
- Emotional connection with words
Weeks 7-8: Performance and confidence
- Performing in front of an audience
- Group feedback
- Building a stable cypher after the workshop ends
The results
By the end, 24 of the 30 participants chose to continue. That's not a random figure: the 20% dropout rate was expected, and it corresponds exactly to the kids who had other commitments or didn't connect with the method.
The data collected:
- Improvement in Italian grades: average +0.8 points for those who attended
- Reduction in school absences: -30% in the following term
- Self-confidence: self-assessment up by 65%
A voice from the participants
"I didn't know freestyle taught you how to think. I thought it was just dancing around and making people laugh. Now I know it's like a verbal game of chess. It helped me with summarizing Italian texts." — Marco T., 15 years old
Next steps
The workshop will be repeated in 2026 with an expansion: 50 participants, involvement of secondary schools, creation of a certified curriculum.
