Rap-Salento Glossary

Italian rap slang translated into Salento dialect and vice versa

It will be a bilingual dictionary of Italian rap slang and Salento dialect: you will be able to search for a rap slang term and find its Salento root, or search for a word from Lecce and discover its hip-hop equivalent.

  • It will offer terms with two-way translation: rap slang ↔ Lecce dialect
  • It will offer usage examples in rap verses
  • It will include a "false friends" section (similar terms with different meanings)
  • It will be open to contributions: you will be able to suggest new terms through a moderated form

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about this tool.

  • Who curated the glossary content?

The glossary was built with the collaboration of Salento MCs, dialectology researchers from the University of Salento and OnStage APS volunteers. It's an ever-evolving community project.
  • Can I find terms from other Southern Italian dialects?

The focus is on the Lecce and Salento dialects, with some extensions to Taranto and Brindisi. We're building bridges with Naples (where dialect rap has a very strong tradition). If you'd like to contribute dialect variants, get in touch.
  • Is the glossary used in school workshops?

Yes, it's one of the most used tools in OnStage workshops in schools: it lets young people express their local identity through rap, valuing dialect as a living language rather than a folkloric relic.
  • Are vulgar terms included?

The glossary includes terms from real-world slang, including coarse ones. There's a "school mode" filter that hides terms classified as vulgar for classroom use. By default, the public version shows the full vocabulary.
  • Can I download it as a dataset?

Yes, the glossary is available as a CSV dataset (CC BY-SA 4.0), free to download for researchers and developers. Please credit OnStage APS as the source. The complete dataset (with audio pronunciation) is available on request for academic projects.
