Legality in Rap Quiz

A test on copyright, legality and hip-hop culture

It will be a quiz exploring the relationship between rap and legality: copyright in sampling, violent lyrics and civil liability, online hate speech, the boundary between artistic freedom and a criminal offence. On completion it will generate a shareable PDF certificate.

  • It will ask questions on music copyright, SIAE, authors' rights
  • It will present real cases of trials involving Italian and international rappers
  • It will explain the legal framework for each answer
  • It will generate a PDF participation certificate with a verification QR code

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about this tool.

  • What is meant by "sampling" and why is it legally complex?

Sampling means reusing portions of existing recordings in new tracks. In Italy the matter is governed by copyright law: as a general rule you need the consent of the rights holder (record label and authors). Before releasing a track containing a sample, check with an expert in music copyright.
  • Is a violent rap lyric a criminal offense?

It depends. Artistic freedom is protected by arts. 21 and 33 of the Constitution (freedom of expression and freedom of the arts), but it has limits: incitement to hate, specific threats towards real people, defamation. The quiz explores these boundaries with real court cases (Italian and European).
  • What is SIAE and why does it matter to rap artists?

SIAE (Italian Society of Authors and Publishers) manages musical copyright in Italy. Whoever publishes music (also on Spotify) has the right to entrust their rights to a collective management body of their choice (art. 4 c. 2 Legislative Decree 35/2017): SIAE is one possibility, not the only one. The quiz covers registration, royalties and the alternatives (Creative Commons, PATAMU).
  • Does the quiz include references to Italian rap?

Yes, there are cases involving Italian artists (respecting their privacy) and rulings by Italian courts on controversial rap lyrics. These concrete examples make the quiz more relevant than US-based cases.
  • How is it used in schools?

The quiz is designed to be given in law, Italian or civic education classes. It can be followed by a discussion or a structured debate on the boundary between art and responsibility. The teacher dashboard shows the class's aggregated results.
