Salento Block Battle 2024: the final that crowned the new champion of the South
A night that will go down in history
On October 22, 2024, Botrugno's main square turned into a hip-hop arena. The Salento Block Battle 2024 was no ordinary competition: it was the final test for the local community, proof that freestyle rap could move crowds even in a small southern town.
The numbers
- 280 spectators from seven different municipalities
- 18 freestyle entrants (16 selected for the semifinals)
- 9 b-boys/b-girls in the breaking category
- Event duration: 5 uninterrupted hours
The Freestyle Battle
The format was tough: two rounds of 90 seconds each, judged by an unfiltered crowd. Anyone who loses the rhythm gets shouted down by the audience. Anyone who drops an incredible improvised rhyme gets hyped up.
The semifinal we remember most: Alessio T. vs Vito "Sparo Rime" Leccese. Three minutes of verbal combat that set the stage for their respective wins in the following rounds. Vito ultimately took the overall title, but Alessio earned the respect of the whole square.
The breaking
If freestyle is the word, breaking is the body. Federica "Fly" Rizzo from Gallipoli dominated the women's category with a series of technical moves few expected from a 21-year-old. The men's win went to a collective of three b-boys from Lecce who performed a hypnotic group choreography.
The day after
What stands out most is the day after the event: the square didn't empty out. Young people kept forming circles to freestyle, film videos, and share moments. A spontaneous cipher was born out of nowhere, just as it should be.
